FC Barcelona traveled to Mendizorrotza to face Alaves in the second gameweek of La Liga 17/18The first half was a cagey affair as Alaves managed to resist Barca’s efforts with a combination of disciplined defensive display as well as good goalkeeping. They too carved out a few good chances as Soriano somehow managed to miss a great one-on-one opportunity against Gerard Pique.

The Argentina star saw his spot-kick saved by Fernando Pacheco in the 39th minute as the home side kept Barca frustrated during a goalless first half at Mendizorroza.

However, Messi scored twice after the break to secure a second win in two La Liga games for Ernesto Valverde’s side.

The Argentine could even have had a hat-trick as his next effort clipped the bar and his performance would have deserved it.

Messi, who is only the second player to reach 350 goals in Europe’s top five leagues after Bayern Munich great Gerd Muller, rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box, but there was to be no hat-trick to celebrate.

No Luis Suarez and as yet no Ousmane Dembele, but Barcelona can still count on the best player onf the planet and Lionel Messi guaranteed a much-needed confidence boost at Alaves.
